These have a panel of fabric attached to straps and a waist band, which are fastened with buckles. These are quick and easy to put on and adjust. They are usually easy to share between people of different body shapes and sizes.
Whilst all basically do the same thing they do vary from brand to brand. Some are more padded than others, and with some the straps can be worn crossed as well as rucksack style. A number of carrier have now been produced so that you can narrow the seat and carry the baby in a seated position world facing for short periods of time. All can be used for front or back carries.
Many are designed to fit from birth to 20 kg, although some of these need inserts to be used from birth, others are only for babies over 3 months. Some companies produce larger carriers for a toddler or even pre school child.
We tend to use four terms when talking about slings and carriers:
- Newborn (birth – 6 months)
- Baby (5/6 months – 18 months)
- Toddler (18 months – 3 years)
- Pre-school (3 years upwards)
It is important to select the correct size carrier for your baby and never to buy one for them to grow into.
